TOO MUCH ON GROUNDHOG DAY ON KBYU-FM, NOTHING ON CANDLEMAS DAY

I heard Jessica Black and some of the other student local news announcers on KBYU-FM today give prominent mention to "groundhog day."  I believe I also heard classical announcer Mark Wait comment about the event.

This illustrates my complaint with the blather that goes out over the air on KBYU.  It also underscores my displeasure with having BYU students in charge of what news stories to present on KBYU.  Like today's report on groundhog day, there are many other instances of stories that should not been given time on a classical music station like KBYU.  I mean stories about local murders, robberies, assaults, and other similar reports on non-important events.  If a listener to KBYU-FM wants to hear reports about crimes and criminals as well as those insipid and dumbed-down stories like those on Punxsutawney Phil, the local TV and radio stations offer plenty of graphic and violent opportunity.

But I argue, such stories do not have a place on a radio station that has a sophisticated listening audience like KBYU.

Instead of sophomoric groundhog day, why was there little or no mention by Wait of Candlemas Day, February 2nd, an interesting day in the church calendar?  Surely Candlemas Day could offer opportunities to select classical music that was written for the religious celebration.  Not that I espouse religious celebrations in themselves but I look for the special opportunity to play classical pieces music that may be currently overlooked.
