Why must a "public" radio station like KBYU-FM start out on December 1st with Christmas carols?
KBYU takes advantage of its "public" status by appealing for donations and pledges from listeners at least four times a year, maybe even more frequently. A public station should not be sectarian, pushing its own view of religion. It should be a-religious, that is, not espousing any one form of religious faith. Yet by playing Christmas carols, KBYU violates this basic principle.
Furthermore, a station that identifies itself as one with a classical music format has no business straying from its focus and broadcasting religious church hymns. KBYU announcers are quick to refer to their station as "Classical 89." Christmas carols even if sung by erstwhile opera singer Kathleen Battle don't fit the classical genre.
The only reason for this egregious promotion of religious sectarian belief is that management at KBYU, I mean Marcus Smith and Eric Glissmeyer, must believe "every member a missionary" precept. KBYU is owned and operated by Brigham Young University, itself owned by the LDS Church. By broadcasting sectarian Christmas carols, these guys must believe that they are fulfilling an obligation of the LDS Church.
I object to this religious slant by KBYU-FM.
