I heard Eric Glissmeyer announcing today - Sunday afternoon - on KBYU-FM, a mostly classical music station broadcasting in Utah. Glissmeyer happens to be KBYU's program services manager "with the responsibility of selecting and scheduling all of the station's programming." In other words, he selects those pieces of classical music and schedules them for broadcast. Glissmeyer was a vocal performance student at BYU and received a Master of Music from that university.
Why then do we get sloppy and lazy pronunciation from, of all people, Eric Glissmeyer? In reading an ad today over the air for an organization named "Prosperity 20-20," Glissmeyer for the most part pronounced it as "Prosperity twen-ny-twen-ny." Hey Eric, what ever happened to the "t"s? Was such sloppy diction allowed when you were performing, say, a classical oratorio as a vocal student at BYU?
Indeed, this is not the first time. I heard the same laziness when Glissmeyer last hosted KBYU's Highway 89 and was interviewing the guest at the time. "Twenty" came out of his mouth as "twen-ny."
Such lazy and sloppy diction not only reflects poorly on KBYU, it also does no credit to the high intellectual standards at Brigham Young University, which happens to own and operate KBYU.
